Arranging for a taxi by phone is recom-mended.〜Which islands are visible today？〜Starting from Nagata town on the western side of Yakushima, you may see Kuchinoerabujima, the closest island to Yakushima. Its shape resem-bles a character in Moomin, a world popular children’s book, lying on its back. Going clockwise from Kuchinoerabujima, you may see three small islands, Kuroshima, Iwojima with a beautiful conical shaped volcano, and Takeshima shaped like a fish, on the horizon. Both Kuchinoerabujima and Iwojima are active volcanic islands. During an eruption, plumes of ash are a common sight. From the northeastern side of Yakushima, you may see Tanegashima, a flat long island running from north to south. The Tanegashima Space Center is located on the southern end of the island. Rocket launches seen from Yakushima are spectacular sights. And if you are lucky, you may see Magejima, a small flat island, off the northern coast of Tanegashima.On the southern side of Yakushima you may see Tokara Retto, a chain of volcanic islands, on the horizon. The largest islands of Takara Retto, Nakanoshima, Kuchinoshima, Gajajima, Suwanosejima, and Tairajima, may be seen from Yakushima. On certain days when the atmospheric conditions are just right, you may see the southernmost part of the mainland of Kagoshima and Mt. Kaimon. Mt. Kaimon, a beautiful coned shaped mountain, was chosen as one of the 100 most beautiful mountains in Japan.
