This vertical distribution of vegetation is one reason why Yakushima was designated as a UNESCO - NaturalWorld Heritage Site.Seibu-rindo Forest Path sometimes known as “the green tunnel”runs under a thick canopy of tree branches which gives you a feeling of being in a tunnel. The road is narrow and winding. When driving on this path, please be careful. Large vehicles are not permitted. You may see Yaku-monkeys and Yaku-deers on this path. The upper area of Seibu-rindo Forest Path is a virgin forest.Shitoko Gajumaru Banyan Park Yakushima is known as the northernmost island where the Gajyumaru Banyan grows. In Yakushima, many Gajyumaru Banyans can be seen along the coast; however, Shitoko Gajumaru Banyan Park is a unique place where there is a high density of wild banyans that can be seen. This cedar is 19.5 meters in height and 8.1 meters in trunk circumference. Kigensugi Cedar can easily be seen by car because it is located by the road. It is the largest Yakusugi cedar that is easily accessible by car. Kigensugi Cedar has 21 kinds of epiphyte living on it. These plants have various flowers and change colors each season. Especially the flowers of Yakushima Rhododendron are beautiful in the spring and Japanese Rowans are very colorful in autumn.Yakushima World Heritage Conservation Center Yakushima World Heritage Conservation Center is a facility of the Ministry of the Environment. Visitors may enjoy many displays and find information about Yakushima. Now you can enjoy the dynamic view of Senpironotaki Waterfall up close.*Opening hours: 8:30 a.m.- 5:00 p.m. *Entry fee: Free of charge *Path length:300m from the entrance gate to the suspension bridge *Estimated time to complete a round trip: about 40-60 min. ※In the event of bad weather, the route will be closed for your safety.Shakunage no Mori, Rhododendron Park Shakunage no Mori, Rhododendron Park is a park for all people including the handicapped. It is a place where you can enjoy the wild Yakushima rhododendron growing in the high mountains. In the beginning, there were 3,500 rhododendrons plants of 110 different varieties, including the Yakushima Rhododendron. In the 1930’s some Yakushima Rhododendron were sent to England and in 1993 some of them were brought back to Yakushima by the members of Yakushima student delegation. You can see rare indigenous plants of Yakuhsima and hear the rushing Kurio River along the boardwalk. * 5 minutes by foot from the nearest bus stop, Kurio-bashi bus stopShiratani Unsuikyo Ravine The Shiratani Unsuikyo Ravine is located at an altitude from 600 to 1200 meters covering an area of 424 hectares. It was designated as a Natural Recreational Forest because of its accessibility for visitors to see the virgin forest. This forest park consists of three hiking courses, the Yayoisugi Course(60 minutes), the Bugyosugi Course(3 hours), and the Taikoiwa Course(4 hours). The hiking courses offer beautiful views of many ancient cedars, evergreen trees, and trees fully covered with moss and ferns. It is a garden made by nature. The forest in Shiratani Unsuikyo Ravine is famous for its abundance of moss and was the inspiration of the animated film
