In March 2007 Kuchinoerabujima Island was entirely incorporated into Yakushima National Park. It is a typical volcanic island with a circumference of 48 km. There are two active volcanoes on the island, Mt. Shinda-ke and Mt. Furudake. Many people are fascinated by volcanic landscape and green pastures. The island’s hot springs such as Nishinoyu onsen and Honmura onsen are ideal for a relaxing dip. The island is also known for its blessings from the sea. Lobsters, other shellfish and fish are abundant year round. Kuchinoerabujima Island is also known for having outstanding fishing spots.*Six mountain huts are unmanned shelters. Detailed information is on page 19 and 23.On the map the traditional term “hodo” (meaning walking trail) is used for some trails but more accurately they are 'mountain trails.'
