Cedars on Yakushima over 1,000 years old are called “Yakusugi” and the younger cedars are called “Kosugi” which literally means child cedar. Yakusugi cedars are known for its close annual rings (growth rings). Massive and ancient Yakusugi cedars are given proper names such as Jomonsugi. It has a root spread of 43 meters in circumference and is estimated to be thousands of years old. Jomonsugi is a popular attraction on the island. In addition, you can still see many Yakusugi stumps, remnants of trees felled many years ago. Wilson's Stump, the most famous stump, has a trunk circumference of 13.8 meters at 5 meters above ground level.
