The prefectural road on Yakushima runs the circumference of the island. (There are no shortcuts to cross overland in the south-north and east-west directions.) When driving in Yakushima, please be careful for there are many crosswalks without traffic lights. Also there are many small country roads not shown on any tourist maps. Some of these roads have dead ends. If you find yourself in this situation, do not panic and carefully return to the main road.
A good rule to follow is when driving on Yakushima always keep in mind where the mountain is and where the sea is, in reference to the main road.
