Credit card and electronic money payments are available at many businesses in Yakushima. However, please be aware that some businesses/shops in Yakushima accept only cash. We advise that you bring some cash for your stay here.
Currency Exchange & International ATM Services
If you need cash, you may be able to use your credit card or cash card at the local post office’s international ATM services in all the major towns. ATMs in Miyanoura, Anbo and Onoaida are open every day but Nagata, Isso, Koseda, Yudomari, and Kurio are closed on Sundays and public holidays. Please check to see if your credit card can be used in Japan.
Kagoshima Bank in Miyanoura can exchange currency up to 100,000 yen. It can also cash US $ traveler’s checks. (It’s better to cash the traveler’s check before coming to Yakushima.) Bank’s ATMs don’t accept credit cards issued in foreign countries.
Please do not expect that you can easily take out some cash at the ATM in the convenience stores (like an urban area) because there are no major convenience stores on Yakushima.
