Willson’s Stump is a remnant of a large Yakusugi cedar tree cut down around 400 years ago. It has a large hollow area inside where a spring flowing out of the ground makes a shadow stream running out of the stump. There are three younger cedar trees, descendants of Wilson’s Stump, growing by it, a good example of regeneration. Dr. E. H. Wilson, a notable English plant collector, researching Yakusugi cedars discovered a large stump in the Taisho Era (1912 – 1926). This stump was later named after him. You may go into the hollow stump and see a heart-shaped skyward view.
